Since 2018, the attacks made against the devices called the Internet of Things as well as networks have escalated all through 2018. By the looks of it, there have been around 32.7 million attacks on the IoT devices in the previous year itself as recorded by SonicWall. Nevertheless, the attack based on phishing computing has significantly reduced in volume given that there is a higher volume of attacks even in the first quarter of 2019.
With addition to this, people around the world desire to have the devices connected or even interconnected with the Internet. Statista claims there will be 31 billion more Internet of Things devices which are all set to be installed by the end of 2020. Some of the critics argue that these devices are easy to be exploited as they do not possess any security control.
The malicious factors, on the other hand, compromise the devices and later add them to a broader scale of botnet attacks. And this is much easier to achieve as they exploit the flaws in security and impacts them in a vast number. Sometimes, these attacks also take control the IoT Devices, mostly the devices that utilize the unchangeable pre-default credentials such as passwords and username.
Most of the manufacturers of the Internet of Things devices are to be blamed as they epically fail at implementing the mechanisms with proper security controls for protecting these devices from the cyberattacks. The lack of an appropriate measure of curating a better IoT device allows these attacks to manifest in the previous year by 217.5%. SonicWall revealed that around 10.3 million devices had been affected so far. SonicWall has tracked various botnets in the last year in the US.
