Different types of human activities, for example, burning fossil fuels or deforestation, have increased the carbon dioxide amount in the atmosphere. On the other hand, climate change has also raised the CO2 level, and now it has become a major concern for all, including conservationists, world governments, and countries. Because the actions the countries and governments take today for CO2 control can influence the future generations’ fate. Lowering the emissions of CO2 is not an easy task, and it will take a lot of effort. As per some reports, the primary emitters of CO2 are:
Agricultural- 9 percent
Electricity production- 28 percent
Transportation sector- 29 percent
Residential and commercial sectors- 12 percent
Industry -22 percent
The CO2 emission level in the UK is increasing at a higher rate, and the authorities are now looking for different solutions.
A comprehensive report created by WPI Economics and Vodafone has stated that advanced technologies such as 5G and IoT can help the United Kingdom to reduce CO2 levels by around 17.4 million every year.
It may be noted that earlier in 2021, the UK’s government issued a law in order to cut the carbon emission level by around 78% by the end of 2035. Besides, the UK has eyed to attain a zero-carbon level by the end of 2050. Well, this is a big target for the country, and for that, the country will need modern tools, and IoT can help in this.
Associate Director of TechUK’s Climate, Environment, and Sustainability department Susanne Baker said that regulators, businesses, and government should work together to deal with the ongoing climate change. Together they can achieve a net-zero CO2 footprint by the end of 2050.
She further added that modern digital technology could help the country to easily attain the desired climate goals. The existing digital technology can have a major impact in lowering the carbon level. Some of the major technologies the country can use are 5G and IoT. These technologies can lower CO2 without disturbing the work, travel, and lives of people.
As per the experts, more than 4.8million tons of CO2 can be saved per year just by deploying smart sensors. This would enhance the crop monitoring result. Besides, it can also improve the feed, fertilizer, water as well as soil monitoring in order to lower the waste and boost up resource efficiency.
By deploying IoT technology in the manufacturing sector, the country can save more than 3 million tons of carbon every year. The experts have suggested using smart building solutions and AI to enhance their product line.
As per a report from the transport department of the country, since 2009, there was only a 3 percent reduction in transport emissions in 2019. With the help of IoT, more than 9 million tons of carbon can be saved every year. Besides, the technology will also help the logistics firms to attain faster delivery.
With the help of the latest technologies like IoT and 5G, the UK can decarbonize faster to meet the desired goals. Vodafone is also supporting this by using renewable electricity.
