Global Security Regulations for IoT Devices Lack Consistency

The IoT sector is evolving, and so are the rules around security management in IoT devices. However, there is no consistency in global security, and if the current scenario continues, we might never have consistency.

The global IoT sector functions under a poorly construed system of labs and logos. This hinders the strength of the IoT industry and its professionals in a way. Moreover, the professionals fail to get the security settings checked and verified. While data and IoT sectors are allied to an extent, the two sectors differ in terms of security.

The data sector has a system of ISO and SAE standards. Since there are prefixed standards that data centers have to meet, the security levels of the sector are maintained. However, the IoT sector lacks in this department. There are no prefixed global security standards IoT devices have to meet. The IoT devices, therefore, lack a reference point when it comes to the maintenance of security. This causes major lacunae in the IoT sector.

It is noteworthy that this lack of a set of standards arises from the diversity in the IoT sector. There are a diverse number of IoT devices in the sector. Moreover, these devices differ on the grounds of application and use cases. On the other hand, this also signifies a very ambivalent mindset towards cheap smaller IoT devices. Because these devices are small and cheap, their security standards are not high.

However, the problem arises from connectivity. Since the IoT devices connect to much larger systems, it is necessary to maintain a high level of security with the devices. Therefore, there is the necessity to introduce consistency in IoT devices. In fact, this has to happen for both smaller and larger IoT devices.

The introduction of higher security standards will simplify things for the designers and IoT developers. The designers can then easily decide on what technology to use for the device. They can also choose the certification standard for their devices with surety. There is scope for change, but change is slow.

Companies that specialize in IoT applications are adopting better security practices. As more and more devices connect to the Internet, there is higher awareness about device security. Therefore, there is a push towards this direction of higher security standards. However, while there is awareness, the application of security standards to solve this problem is still far off.

The developers understand that security is one of the most important core competencies for successful IoT devices development. The IoT devices have to control, sense and actuate the functions they provide to the user. This requires a higher level of security. The companies have the responsibility to ensure that the users using the IoT devices are trustworthy. In addition to this, the IoT developers should also ensure that the information relaying between these devices is right and ethical.

Developers say that the sure-shot way of developing this is to apply uniform security standards for the smallest to largest of the IoT devices. However, when this comes to fruition is a thing to wait for.
